The Water Cycle

Peregrine often thinks up "experiments", most of which we never get around to doing. One of his recent ideas was to make ocean water with salt and water. He did it not long ago and was thrilled that his experiment "worked". Today I wanted to have some "special time" with him. While Raphael slept and Poppy watched a movie, Peregrine and I took his ocean water experiment a little further. You should definitely listen to this while you read!

Evaporation and condensation,
The water cycle, the water cycle,
Followed by precipitation,
The water cycle, the water cycle,
The never-ending cycle is taking place
All the time and everywhere....

(Even in our kitchen!)

Here's our mini ocean, a couple of tablespoons of salt dissolved in warm water.

Evaporation
The heat of the sun (or the burner, for lack of a heat lamp and a couple of hours) causes water vapor to form into a cloud of steam.

Condensation and Precipitation
I placed four glasses around the pot, then set a large glass lid on top of them to trap our "cloud".

Through the glass lid we could watch the steam condense and run off the sides as "rain".

Just for fun we let the water boil away and were left with a crusty bed of salt...

...and a very pleased boy!

(I know I've linked to these before, but I must put in another plug for these science songs. They were recorded in the 1950s and 60s and Peregrine, and the rest of us, love listening to them. He has learned a lot of basic science concepts from them.)

Happenings

Guess who is one month old today? I can hardly believe it!

Here are some bits and pieces of life around here:
  • Gloria and Baby got to come home from the hospital last night! Hooray! He is doing good and I trust they and Okon are very happy to be in their own home together. Thanks so much for your prayers.
  • I explained to Peregrine the other day that people choose different places to give birth to their babies. Here are his thoughts on homebirth: "That's how I'm going to ask my wife to do it. I'll tell her that I would prefer her to have our baby at home so we don't have to be away from home so much. If we ever adopt any orphans, my wife and I, we'll have our birth at home so we won't have to go to the hospital so we won't have to sleep there, so we can take care of our orphans."
  • We just bought a quarter of a cow, cut and wrapped and in the freezer. It's local, grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic free beef. Woohoo! We don't really eat a lot of beef, but when we do I like to buy the good stuff, and this is way cheaper. I also really don't know how to cook anything other than hamburger and roasts. So I guess I'm going to be getting familiar with the meat section of my cookbook. Do you have any good beef recipes you'd like to share?
  • We'd appreciate your prayers for our family. The last few days have been really difficult with Peregrine, and we really need God's wisdom to know how best to guide our boy. Also, Poppy has been having night terrors, which is upsetting to say the least. Please pray for God's grace and peace for us.
  • And I'll leave you with one last picture- we're (happily) outnumbered by these three little and not-so-little sweeties!

More Prayer Please- UPDATED

UPDATE Wednesday Night- I was able to go see Gloria, Okon, and "Roo" (his nickname for now) this evening. He seems to be doing well, but is still in the NICU for now. It sounds like he'll need to stay in the hospital for a few days while he's on the antibiotics so they can watch and make sure he's clear of any signs of infection. I don't know where the infection is; they just determined he's fighting something from his blood work. I was able to go in and see him for a while and he's so strong and precious. He's nursing well and seems very peaceful. Gloria and Okon seem to be doing well too. Thanks for your prayers and encouraging words.

Please pray for my little nephew who was born last night (and who so far, doesn't have a name.) Babies are often born with some gunk in their lungs and it usually comes out on its own, through them crying, coughing, etc. At five this morning, because his breathing still sounded rattly, Gloria's midwife accompanied them over to the hospital so they could be observed until it cleared up. Baby is in the NICU and is being given antibiotics for infection. (I'm guessing infection in the lungs?) I don't really have much information at this point; it sounds like he's okay, but they just want to make sure his breathing clears up. Gloria is being allowed to nurse him but not have him in the room with her. I have no idea how long they think he'll need to stay, but will update this post when I hear more. I hope to be able to go see them later today.
Thanks to all who have been praying with us!

It's a Boy!!

Gloria gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy at 8:45 this evening! We are praising God for this brand new little life. She did so well and I was privileged to get to be there with her, just as she's been at all my births. Thanks for praying!

Life With the Ferocious Rumblebuffin

*Update on Gloria: Thanks to those who are praying. She still hasn't had her baby, but for the last few days has been having a lot of pre-labor going on. So, something is happening. Please keep praying that labor will kick in, and soon! She's scheduled to see her midwife tomorrow, but hopefully will be having, or have had, her baby by that time.

It's hard to believe that our little Raphael is nearly four weeks old already. Even as I typed that I was doing the math in my head; could it really be four weeks? Already he has grown and changed so much and it's hard to imagine life without him in our family. Knowing how quickly they grow up, I've tried to really savor the precious moments of him being so tiny and new and have spent many sweet hours with him snuggled up against me. Mama and Baby, content just to be together. I'm trying to remember the little things, the way he feels in my arms, his sweet smell, the little sounds he makes, because I know how quickly it goes by.
Erik was able to take off nearly two weeks and that greatly eased the transition for all of us. Also, friends brought meals over for the first few weeks, which was a huge blessing. Overall, I feel like we're doing really well. The kids, of course, have their moments, but that's to be expected. I have my moments too, but feel like the I'm doing much better than after giving birth to the other kids. I didn't lose as much blood this time, and have had a lot more energy. I'm tired much of the time, but not exhausted, and don't feel like I'm having the extreme emotional swings I've experienced postpartum before. (I attribute this, in part at least, to taking a better supplement this pregnancy, as I had much more energy throughout.)
Peregrine and Poppy are liking Raphael very much. Peregrine can hardly walk by him without saying something along the lines of "Oh, isn't he just the cutest little baby in the world!" And they both like to hold him any chance they get. Peregrine sings to him when he cries, and Poppy strokes him and says "I can comfort him down!" Peregrine was "petting" the top of his head one day and cried out in great excitement "Mom! Mom! He has a crater in his head!" I'm always glad when the soft spot in those little heads hardens up. Or, in other words, when their "crater" goes away!
Raphael is growing quickly; at two weeks, when they're supposed to have regained their birth weight, he'd already put on 1 1/2 pounds. He's a pretty content baby and is sleeping between three and five hours at a time at night. I usually only nurse him twice at night so I feel like I'm getting some rest. Our days are going well too; I feel like we're settling back into a bit of a routine. With the weather (finally!) getting nicer the kids have been able to be outside more and we're starting to go for walks again too.
Like all babies, in our family at least, Raphael is already subject to lots of silly nicknames. I started calling him Rumblebuffin at times on account of the many rumbles that come out of him. Peregrine somehow added Ferocious to that, and often refers to him as the Ferocious Rumblebuffin!
So, there's a little update on life with Raphael, aka the Ferocious Rumblebuffin. My heart is filled with gratitude when I look at this family God has given to me. My greatest desire was always to me a wife and a mama, and God has given me a wonderful husband and such precious children. I thank you again for praying for us and rejoicing with us!
